Now more than ever it is clear that the current economic paradigm needs to change and move from a model of maximizing economic value to one of maximizing the value of resources, products and materials in use. This is what the circular economy suggests to us: everything we send for disposal represents an enormous loss.
Reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery of waste are the pillars that underlie the circular economy and constitute virtuous tools that respond to the demand for sustainable growth, where nothing is wasted and where all resources are best managed. The concept recognizes the need for an economy that functions efficiently on all scales, for large and small businesses, organizations and individuals, globally and locally.
The circular economy makes it possible to minimize the exploitation of raw materials upstream and reduce landfills downstream.
Raffmetal has undertaken LCA analysis of its activity, as an internationally recognized tool and standard. The objective is to quantify not only our carbon footprint, but also other environmental impacts related to the company's operations, to understand how much the plant and process innovations introduced over the years have generated a return on investment in environmental sustainability and to outline the strategy for the coming years.
Below the strengths of Raffmetal's internal production process that allow to have a sustainable product with a low carbon footprint.
RAW MATERIAL
Raffmetal’s raw material is 100% recycled aluminum, this allows:
- Upstream: to avoid the exploitation of natural resources from extraction.
- Downstream: to eliminate the costs of metal scrap disposing which, otherwise, would be sent to landfills and therefore considered waste. Thanks to Raffmetal's contribution in the circular economy sector, 5 million tons of aluminium scrap have been recovered and valorized in over forty years, for an equivalent saving of 29 million tons of CO₂ compared to the extraction of primary aluminium.
INNOVATIVE ZERO WASTE PROCESS
Raffmetal’s melting process generates zero waste. All the residues of the melting process are recycled and valorized thanks to the revolutionary saline residues recovery plant, installed back in 1989, which has allowed to outline the winning road of recycling that still today represents an excellence of the circular economy.
Moreover, Raffmetal is the only company in Italy able to supply both aluminium alloys in ingots and in liquid state. The supply of aluminium alloys in liquid state allows considerable energy savings to our customers avoiding the remelting of ingots as well as an important reduction in terms of CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere, giving the possibility to lower the carbon footprint of the finished product.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Raffmetal has always applied a company strategy aimed at recovering all the thermal waste available in the company, constantly innovating the plants and reducing the need for energy from fossil sources.
The Heat Recovery Plant, installed from 2014, with an investment of over € 35 million, provides for the recovery of the heat contained in the exhaust gases coming from the afterburners of rotary kilns, from the plant for the recovery of melting by-products and from the drying plant. The self-produced heat allows a methane saving of 12.500 tons of CO₂ per year. In the coming years investments will be made in order to leave open the possibility to realize, in agreement with the institutional bodies, a district heating plant for the municipalities surrounding the company.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Environmental policy reinforces the approach to sustainable development that Raffmetal has always pursued. Management procedures, plant investments and actions aimed at mitigating emissions, water consumption and protecting biodiversity and woodland flora are proof of this.
In 2013 an oxygen pipeline was built, with an investment of over € 7 million, which allows to improve both environmental sustainability in terms of reducing CO₂ emissions and safety by removing 2.500 trucks/year from the road.
